Dental Care tips to prevent Teeth Decay

Poor oral habits can cause several dental problems. Teeth decay is the most common dental problem. It is the destruction of tooth structure and can affect enamel and the dentin layer of the tooth. Teeth decay occurs due to poor mouth hygiene, especially not cleaning teeth after having foods that contain carbohydrates such as cereals, bread, milk, cakes, soda, and candy.

Occurrence of teeth decay
When food containing carbohydrates are left on the teeth, bacteria in mouth digest these foods and convert them into acids. Bacteria, food debris, acids and saliva combine to form plague. The acids in the plague dissolve the enamel surface of the teeth, which results in teeth cavity.

How to prevent teeth decay?

Good oral health can be maintained with following habits –

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Make sure that your toothpaste contains fluoride, which fight against bacteria and helps to prevent tooth decay.
  • Floss your teeth daily. Use interdental cleaners to clean between the teeth such as Reach stim-U-Dent, Oral-B Interdental Brush or sulcabrush.
  • Rinse your mouth with water after each meal.
  • Avoid snacks and prefer for nutritious and balance meals. Reduce intake of foods rich in carbohydrates such as pretzels, candy and chip as it remains on the tooth surface. Brush your teeth after having sticky foods.
  • Consult the dentist about the use of supplemental fluoride, it strengthens the teeth.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for the dental checkup, so that dental problem can be identified.
  • Rinse your mouth with mouthwash that contains fluoride.

Diet and nutritional concern

  • Intake moderate amount of carbohydrate and fat
  • Eat the foods rich in fiber
  • Avoid snacks in between meals
  • Limit your teeth exposure to sugar not more than 5 times a day
  • Avoid having sweets before going to sleep at night
  • Improve the teeth appearance by having apples and cedrate fruits

Teeth decay can be prevented by eating right food and maintaining proper oral hygiene. Cleaning and flossing the teeth gives healthy teeth for life. Also visit the dentist for regular dental checkups.
