World Diabetes Day
“More than 346 million people worldwide are having diabetes” – WHO
Isn’t the above figure of diabetics overwhelming? You will be more surprised to know that this number is likely to more than double by 2030. Almost 80% of deaths due to diabetes occur in low and middle-income nations. World Diabetes Day aims to raise global awareness of diabetes related to its escalating rates and preventive measures.

History of World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day celebration was started by International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and WHO on 14 November to commemorate the birthday of Frederick Banting, who along with Charles Best discovered insulin in 1992, a life-saving treatment for diabetics.

Celebrations of World Diabetes Day

Each year, World Diabetes Day features a new theme on diabetes, which is chosen by the International Diabetes Federation. For 2009-2013, the theme is ‘Diabetes Education and Prevention’. World Diabetes Day event engages millions of people globally in diabetes awareness. It is celebrated worldwide by over 200 member associations of the International Diabetes Federation in more than 160 countries and territories, all Member States of United Nations and some other organizations and associations, healthcare professionals and patients living with diabetes and their families.

During the campaign, wide range of activities, tailoring to different groups is organised. The activities include –

  • Political events
  • Free screenings for diabetes and related complications
  • Public information gatherings
  • Leaflet and poster campaigns
