Hernia is a medical condition in which an organ protrudes through the wall of the cavity that usually contains it. The sac comes out trough a hole or a weak area in the fascia. There are different types of hernia according to its location – abdominal hernias, pelvic hernias, diaphragmatic hernias, anal hernias, intracranial hernia, spigelian hernia and hernias of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral discs.
Symptoms of hernia
Symptoms and sign of hernia vary depending on its type. Patient may experience symptoms in few cases, while in some cases; hernia is diagnosed after the physical examination by doctor. Some common symptoms of hernia includes –
- Abdominal heaviness on bending
- Pain from lifting heavy objects
- Lump decreases in size when person lies down and becomes enlarged while coughing and standing or due to strain on abdominal muscles
Reducible hernia symptoms –
- Appears as a new lump in groin or other abdominal area
- Hernia may pain or tender to touch
- Size of lump increase when standing or due to increased abdominal pressure
Irreducible hernia
- Usually painful and enlarged that cannot be returned into the abdominal cavity on its own
- Strangulation, in which supply of blood is cut off to tissue in the hernia
- Nausea and vomiting
Causes of hernia
In most of the cases hernia occurs when there is too much pressure in the area of the residing organ and the boundary is weak. Some of the common causes of hernia are-
- Certain medical conditions such as pregnancy, COPD, ascites, dyschezia, and prostatic hypertrophy
- Heavy lifting with improper technique
- Poison
- Hard coughing bouts
- Incorrect posture
- Sharp blows to abdomen
- Obesity
- Chronic lung disease
- Straining during urination and bowel movement
- Fluid in abdominal cavity
- Muscles becomes weak due to unhealthy diet, overexertion and smoking
Treatments for hernia
To fix the problem of hernia, surgery is performed by the general surgeon. Hernia surgery is recommended if hernias are painful and getting larger. Laparoscopic surgery is a minimal invasive surgery, in which one or more small incision is required for inserting the camera and instrument. This hernia surgery is less painful and patient is discharged from hospital within a week or two.
