Infertility is defined as biological inability of a person to contribute to conception. A couple is infertile if they are not able to conceive after having unprotected sex at least for 1 year. Infertility problems can be found in both man and woman due to different causes. Certain infertility problems can be diagnosed and treated, while some problems are unknown.

Causes of infertility in men
  • Varicocele occurs when there are too large veins on man’s testicles, which heats the testicles. As a result, it affects the number or shape of the sperm.
  • In some cases, injuries or any kind of damage to the reproductive system blocks the movement of the sperm.
  • Low count in number of sperms
Causes of infertility in women
  • Abnormal ovulation, which is causes by polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or primary ovarian insufficiency (POI)
  • Fallopian tube is blocked due to pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis or surgery for an ectopic pregnancy
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Physical problem with uterus
Treatments for infertility

Gynaecologist recommends for the specific type of treatment based on the infertility problem in men and women.

Infertility treatment for men –

Sexual problems – Gynaecologist treats the problem of impotence or premature ejaculation by medicines or behavioural therapy.

Low sperm count – Infection or any other problem affecting the sperm count is treated by surgery and antibiotics.

Sperm movement – Blockage in reproductive system interrupts the movement of sperm, which is corrected by performing a surgery.

Infertility treatment for women

Some problems of infertility in women can be treated with surgery. Medicines are prescribed by the gynaecologist to deal with the problems of ovulation. In some cases, intrauterine insemination (IUI) is suggested by the doctor. In IUI procedure, a woman is injected with specially prepared sperm. Another method used for pregnancy in woman is assisted reproductive technology (ART). In this procedure, eggs of woman are removed and mixed with sperm to make embryos. Later, the embryo is placed back in the uterus.
