Obesity is a medical condition defined as excessive body fat accumulation, which has adverse effects on health and leads to increased health problems. An individual is considered to be obese, if his body mass index (BMI) measures more than 30. BMI is calculated by dividing person’s weight in kilograms by square of his height in metres.
Causes of obesity
The main cause of obesity is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories burned. People become obese due to following reasons –
- Consuming too many calories – Intake of too much calories than the required amount, leads to obesity. A person becomes obese by consistently consuming too many calories over a period of time.
- High fat – refines sugary food – Your dietary habits play an important role in casing obesity. Over eating of trans-fats and refined white flour carbohydrates, combined with low fibre consumption results in excess of fat accumulation.
- Lack of physical activities – Now a days people are leading sedentary lifestyle. Earlier the people use to walk down the streets for shopping but now most of the people drive their cars to reach the market. The less they move around, the fewer the calories are burned.
- Less sleep – According to a research, both children and adults are at increased risk of obesity if they sleep for a short duration.
- Lack of physical exercises –Unbalanced diet combined with lack of physical exercise increases the risk of obesity. Taking too much calories but not doing any exercise to burn them, results in excess body fat accumulation.
- Genes and family history – Obesity tends to run in families.
Treatments for obesity
Create a long-term plan to successfully deal with obesity. Increased physical activities and consuming healthy diet with low fat can be very beneficial in achieving an ideal weight. Doctors suggest to low down the intake of calories to decrease the weight. Men should take 1,200 to 1,500 calories and women should take 1,500 to 1,800 calories per day.
In case, dietary changes and exercising does not show any positive results and you continue to gain weight, doctor may recommend for surgery of medications.
