Psychiatric disorders, also known as mental disorder or mental illness are psychological patterns, which are reflected in patient’s behaviour and functions in daily life. Causes of psychiatric disorders
The causes of psychiatric disorders are varied. Mental health experts believe that combination of environmental and genetic factors triggers the disorder. Certain health problems and various kinds of stresses can cause psychiatric disorder. Number of following risk factors also increases the chances of developing psychiatric disorders –
- Difficult temperament
- External factors such as poor nutrition, poverty, abuse, or neglect
- Low birth weight
- Inherited or genetic predisposition
- Prenatal exposure to illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco and certain toxins
- Severe parental discord
- Mental or physical trauma
- Unsatisfactory relationships
Treatments for Psychiatric disorders
Depending on the specific psychiatric disorder, the treatment is given by the psychiatric. The conditions causing the disorder are firstly diagnosed by the physician, so that disorder is treated with most suitable method. Some of the comprehensive treatments include family counselling, medications, group therapy, and psychoeducation support. Psychotherapy is another option for treating many mental disorders. It is of many types – cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis and family therapy or systemic therapy.
In severe cases of mental disorders, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is used. Rarely the psychosurgery is performed by the neurologist to treat the disorder. Some creative therapies such as art therapy, music therapy or drama therapy are also used.
